Crochet Dress from Granny Square Clusters | beginner Pattern

This pattern was inspired by the spring beach air and the warm summer weather. I wanted this dress to be easy to make and wearable in multiple configurations. The dress needed to be easy wear all day long and comformable against your skin.

So I was relly excited when Hobbii was looking for soft light spring dresses and clothing I new this was my chance to bring my vision to life.

The pattern can be worn with 3+ strap designs.

Before you begin...

This pattern uses ch 2 at the start of the row as a double crochet (dc).

This pattern is created using special stitches like the puff stitch, petal stitch, and granny square clusters.

The pattern is designed for advanced beginners and is easy to make within a week or two. Good quality yarn really does make the dress extra flowy, so please consider buy in the recommended Seashell yarn from Hobbii.

Part 1: Granny Squares

(Make 2)

This is the base of the dress - two granny squares. Each size has less rows of granny squares.

Chain Circle

Make a sl st and then ch 4. Sl to the first ch to make a circle

Row 1

Ch 2 (does not count as a dc). DC 16, Sl st to join.

Row 2

Ch 2 (does not count as a puff stitch). Make 16 puff stitches. Sl st to join.

Row 3

Ch 2. Make 16 petal stitches. Sl st to join.

Row 4

Sl st to the next ch space. Ch 2 (counts as hdc), hdc 2, ch 1. DC 3, ch 1, DC 2, TC 1, ch 2 for the corner. [ TC 1, DC 2, ch 1 skip st, DC 3, ch 1 skip st, hdc 3, ch 1 skip st, DC 3, ch 1 skip st, DC 2, TC 1 ] repeat [ ] three times total. TC 1, DC 2, ch 1 skip st, DC 3, ch 1 skip st, sl st to the first st.

Row 5

Sl st to the next ch space. Part 2: Assembly + Dress Skirt

(Make 1)

Making the dress is done at the same time as making a the skirt. The only difference between Small, Medium, and Large is the chain across the back of the dress.

Row 1

Continuing off from the last granny square (B), sl st to the next ch space and then ch 2 (counts as dc), DC 2, ch 1 skip st. [ DC 3, ch 1 skip st ] repeat [ ] across two sides of the granny square. At the corner of the second side, DC 2 in the corner then grab the second granny square (A) and DC in the new corner. Continue to repeat [ ] across the two sides of the last granny square.

Chain must be divisible by 4:

For Small (SM), ch 20.

For Medium (MD), ch 40.

For Large (LG), ch 60.

Sl st to granny square (B) and repeat [ ] across the side of the granny square, end on a sl st to join to the original ch 2.

Row 2

Sl st to the next ch space, and ch 2 (counts as double crochet. Make a DC in each st around. Sl st to ch 2 to join.

Row 3

Ch 2, make a puff stitch in each st around (no ch inbetween). Sl st to join.

Row 4

Repeat row 2.

Row 5

Ch 2 (counts as dc), DC 2, ch 1 skip 3 sts. [ DC 3, ch 1 skip 3 st ] repeat [ ] around the dress. Sl st to ch 2 to join.

Row 6 - Row 56

Sl st to the next ch space, Ch 2 (counts as dc), DC 2, ch 1 skip 3 sts. [ DC 3, ch 1 skip st ] repeat [ ] around the dress. Sl st to join.

the pattern is designed to be around ankle length. Add more rows as needed.

Row 66

Ch 2 (counts as dc), DC in each st around. Fasten off with sl st to ch 2, and weave in ends.

Part 3: Straps

(Make 2)

The dress straps are designed to be styled however you would like. You can cross the straps in front or in back.

Row 1

Attach your yarn to the side of one of the granny square triangles.

Ch 1, then * hdc in each st around until you get to the peak of one of the granny squares.

For a Small (SM), ch 101.

For Medium (MD), ch 151.

For Large (LG), ch 201.

Skip the last st and hdc back down the chain.

Continue to hdc in each st around. Repeat from *.

To Wear

1. Tie the straps around your neck in a bow.

2. Loop the straps straight back and through the ch spaces in the back.

3. Feed the opposite strap through the front of the last row of the granny square top to create an X pattern with the straps.
