To make this placemat I used a propylene and lurex cord. This material gives the placemat a nice, solid feel, while the lurex adds a beautiful shimmer and sparkle. It's the perfect choice for a placemat that is both practical and elegant.

This pattern is highly customizable. You can choose your preferred yarn and color, depending on your personal taste and home decor. The placemat is 36.5 cm/14.3" wide, but you can vary the number of rounds to make it larger or smaller.

Before you begin...

This pattern is worked in a continuous spiral without joining or turning, using basic stitches such as slip stitch, chain, single crochet, half double crochet and clusters of 3 double crochets worked together in the same stitch (3dc-cl).

"hdc inc" means "half double crochet increase", i.e. 2 hdc worked in the same stitch.

I strongly recommend using a stitch marker to mark the beginning of each round. This will help you identify the first stitch of each round, keep track of your progress and prevent mistakes.

With one skein (500 gr/17.6 oz) I made 2 and a half placemats. This means that you will need two skeins to make a set of 4/5 placemats.

One more note about crocheting circles: if you place the increase stitches in the same location over several rounds, distinct corners will begin to form, ruining the round shape. Instead, it is better to stagger the location of your increases - as in my instructions - in order to make a perfect circle.

Part 1: Circle

(Make 1)

I worked 15 rounds before the border, but you can vary the number of rounds to make a larger or smaller placemat.

Round 1

Make a magic circle, ch 2 (counts as a stitch) and work 9 hdc into the circle (= 10 sts); pull tightly to close the circle.

Alternatively, if you are not sure how to make the magic circle, you can do the following: ch 6, 1 sl st in first chain to close the circle, then ch 2 (counts as a stitch) and 9 hdc into the circle (=10 sts).

Round 2

2 hdc in each stitch (=20 sts)

Round 3

[hdc inc, hdc] around (=30 sts)

Round 4

[hdc, hdc inc, hdc] around (=40 sts)

Round 5

[hdc inc, hdc in the next 3 sts] around (= 50 sts)

Round 6

[hdc in the next 2 sts, hdc inc, hdc in the next 2 sts] around (=60 sts)

Round 7

[hdc inc, hdc in the next 5 sts] around (=70 sts)

Round 8

This is the last round before the border. Since you've been working in a spiral, you'll notice that the edges aren't even. To even off the edges, after the last hdc of the last round, before fastening off, continue working 2 sc in the next 2 sts and the 2 sl st in the next 2 sts.

Part 2: Border

(Make 1)

The simple border of this placemat, which adds a light and airy feel to the overall design, is worked using clusters of 3 double crochets worked together in the same stitch (3dc-cl), single crochets and chain stitches.

Round 16

Ch 2 (which counts as the first double crochet of the first cluster of 3 dc), work 2 half-closed double crochet stitches in the first stitch, yarn over and pull it back through all three loops. This is the first 3dc-cl. Ch 2 and skip the next 2 stiches. Work 1 3dc-cl over the next stitch as follows: (yarn over, insert hook into the next stitch, yarn over, pull through) 3 times, yarn over, pull through all 4 loops on hook. [*Ch 2, skip 2 stitches, 1 3dc-cl over the next stitch*]. Repeat from * to * around. Join with a sl st to the top of the first 3dc-cl to close the round.

Round 17

Ch 1, [1 sc on top of 3DcCl, 3 sc in ch space]. Repeat around.

Cut the yarn, leaving a tail of about 15 cm/6". Thread the tail through a yarn needle. Insert the needle into the first stitch of the round and pull the yarn through to secure. Bring the needle to the back of the work and weave the tail through a few stitches on the wrong side to hide the end.

The placemat is now completed!😊
