Before you begin...

Skill Level: Intermediate – This pattern involves shaping, color changes, and sewing pieces together, making it ideal for crocheters with some experience.
Estimated Time: Approximately 2 days to complete, depending on your pace.
Yarn Suggestions: Use a soft acrylic or cotton blend yarn in shades of green, red, and white for a festive feel. You will need a small amount of scrap yellow and black yarn for the eyes and mouth.
Hook Size: I used a 2.5mm crochet hook for the main parts of the Grinch and a 6mm crochet hook for the white trim so it remained fluffy.
Techniques Used: Magic circle, single crochet, increasing, decreasing, color changes, and sewing.
Assembly: Pieces will need to be sewn together, so keep a darning needle handy. I chose to hot glue gun the eyes and mouth to the face so it would lay evenly on the surface.

Part 1: Grinch Body

(Make 1)

This pattern is designed so the Grinch is one main piece with legs and arms sewn on. The belly all the way up to the santa hat are crocheted together as one.

Belly

To start: With Color A, make a magic circle, ch 1.

Row 1: Place 8 sc in the circle. Sl st first ch.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc 2 in each stitch around, sl st to join.

Row 3: Ch 1, *sc 1, sc 2 in the next st. Repeat * around, sl st to join.

Row 4-10: Ch 1, sc 1 in each stitch around, sl st to join.

Row 11: Ch 1, *sc2tog, sc 1 in next 2 sts. Repeat * around, sl st to join.

Row 12-14: Repeat row 4. Fasten off Color A, carry the tail with you when we add Color B in the next step.

Chest

To start: With Color B, make a sl kt and attach to the st fasten off for smooth seam all the way up.

Row 15-23: Ch 1, sc 1 in each st around, sl st to join.

Row 24: Ch 1, sc2tog around, sl st to join. Fasten off Color B.

Head

To start: With Color A, make a sl kt and attach to the st fasten off for smooth seam all the way up.

Row 25: Ch 1, sc 2 in each st around, sl st to join.

Row 26: Ch 1, sc 1 in each st around, sl st to join.

Row 27: Ch 1, *sc 1, sc 2 in the next st,. Repeat * around, sl st to join.

Row 28: Repeat row 26.

Santa Hat

To start: With Color B, make a sl kt and attach to the st fasten off for a smooth seam all the way up.

Row 34: Ch 1, sc 1 in each stitch around. Sl st to join.

Row 35: Ch 1, sc2tog around. Sl st to join.

Row 36-38: Repeat row 34. Fasten off Color B. Pull tail into the top of the hat.

White Trim

The fluffy yarn will go between the color changes, attached to the green rows.

You will add the white trim as a sl st row, around the posts of the following green rows: 14, 24, 33.

Use your 6mm crochet hook.

To start: With Color C, make a sl kt and attach to the desired row.

Sl st rows: Insert you hook around the post of the next st and sl st to that one. Sl st around, then sl st to the first sl st and fasten off. Weave in the ends back into the sl st row to hide.

Santa Puff: Grab a darning needle and a little piece of Color C. Weave the yarn around the last row of color B about 6 times to create a puff.

Chest

Santa Hat

Row 36-38: Repeat row 34. Fasten off Color B. Pull tail into the top of the hat.

White Trim

The fluffy yarn will go between the color changes, attached to the green rows.

You will add the white trim as a sl st row, around the posts of the following green rows: 14, 24, 33.

(Make 2)

The legs are made individually then sewn onto the belly using the tail.

Leg

To start: With Color A, make a magic circle, ch 1.

Row 1: Sc 8 into the mc. Sl st to the first ch to join.

Row 2-8: Ch 1, sc 1 in each st around. Sl st to join.

Row 9: Ch 1, sc 1 in the first two sts, ch 2 and skip 4 stitches, sc 1 in the last two sts. Sl st to join.

Row 10: Ch 1, sc 1 in the first two sts, sc 1 in each of the next 4 stitches, skipping the ch 2 and attaching to the open sts in row 8. Sc 1 in the last two sts. Sl st to join.

Row 11-12: Repeat row 2. Fasten off Color A with a long tail to attach the leg to the body.

Slipper

To start: With Color B, ch 4, sl st to the first ch to make a ch circle.

Row 1: Ch 1, sc 4 into the ch circle. Sl st to the first ch to join.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc 1 in each st around. Sl st to join.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc 2 in each st around. Sl st to join.

Row 4-6: Repeat row 2.

The next 5 rows are worked like flat rows with a turn to create the heel of the boot.

Row 7: Turn work. Sc 1 in each of the last 4 sts. Ch 1.

Row 8: Turn work. Sc 1 in each of the last 4 sts. Sl st into the side of row 7, Ch 1.

Row 9: Turn work. Sc 1 in each of the last 4 sts. Sl st into the side of row 7, Ch 1.

Row 10: Turn work. Sc 1 in each of the last 4 sts. Sl st into the side of row 6, Ch 1.

Row 11: Turn work. Sc 1 in each of the last 4 sts. Sl st into the side of row 6, Ch 1.

Row 12: Turn work. Sc 1 in each of the last 4 sts. Skip over to Row 6 and sc 4 in each of the 4 remaining sts. Sl st to the first ch to join. Fasten off with a long tail to weave the slipper to the legs.

White Trim

The fluffy yarn will go around the edge of row 12.

Use your 6mm crochet hook.

To start: With Color C, make a sl kt and attach to the row 12.

Sl st row: Sl st around, then sl st to the first sl st and fasten off. Weave in the ends back into the sl st row to hide.

Assembly

Make both legs and slippers before continuing.

1. Attach the long tail of the slipper to a darning needle.

2. Stuff the first few rows of the leg into the stocking. Make sure to not stuff the end with the long tail in the stocking so you use the ends to attach to the leg.

3. Weave the tail back and forth across the width of the slipper making sure to go through the leg piece.

4. Place a florist wire about 3 inches long into the leg.

5. Attach the long tail of the leg to a darning needle.

6. Sew the leg onto the belly of the grinch between rows 5-7. Use pins to hold the leg in place as you sew.

7. Once secure, cut off any extra yarn tails for the slipper and leg.

Part 1: Grinch Arms

(Make 2)

The Grinch's arms and hands are simple crochet tubes with a half circle on top. Make a set of hands and arms with long tails for assembly.

Arm

To start: With Color B, make a magic circle, ch 1.

Row 1: Make 6 sc in the magic circle, sl st to join.

Row 2-6: Ch 1, sc 1 in each st around, sl st to join.

Row 7: Ch 1, sc 1 in the first two sts, ch 1 and sk 2 sts, sc 1 in the last two sts, sl st to join.

Row 8: Ch 1, sc 1 in the first two sts, sc 1 in each of the next two sts, skipping the ch 1 and attaching to the open sts in row 6. Sc 1 in the last two sts. Sl st to join.

Row 9-11: Repeat row 2. Fasten off Color B and leave a long tail to attach the arm to the body.

White Trim

The fluffy yarn will go around the edge of the hand, on row 3.

Use your 6mm crochet hook.

To start: With Color C, make a sl kt and attach to the row 3 of the hand.

Sl st row: Sl st around, then sl st to the first sl st and fasten off. Weave in the ends back into the sl st row to hide.

Hand

To start: With Color B, make a magic circle. ch 1.

Row 1: Make 8 sc in the mc, sl st to join.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc 2 in each st around, sl st to join.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc2tog around, sl st to join. Fasten off Color B with a long tail to attach the hand to the arm.

Assembly

Make both hands and arms before continuing.

1. Attach the long tail of the hand to a darning needle.

2. Stuff the first few rows of the arm into the hand. Make sure to not stuff the end with the long tail in the hand so you can use that end to attach the arm to the chest.

3. Weave the tail back and forth across the width of the hand making sure to go through the arm piece.

4. Place a florist wire about 3 inches long into the arm.

5. Attach the long tail of the arm to a darning needle. Use pins to secure in place.

6. Sew the leg onto the belly of the grinch between rows 21-22.

7. Once secure, cut off any extra yarn tails for the arm and hand.

Part 4: Grinch Face

(Make 1)

The face is the last part of the Grinch Amigurumi pattern. I chose to hot glue the face so that it can lay flat on the piece and not get pulled by the yarn tension, but feel free to sew the face onto the Grinch.

Mouth & Nose

Row 1: With Color A, ch 5, hdc 2 in the 2nd ch from the hook, dc 2 in the next st, ch 3 and sl st into the side of the first ch to make a picot stitch. Then dc in the next st and hdc 2 in the last ch space. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Row 2: With Black Yarn, sl st across the bottom edge of each st from the previous row. Fasten off yarn and weave in ends.

Row 3: With Black Yarn, sl st to the picot stitch space and then sl st directly up to the first ch 5 to make the center smile line of the Grinch's mouth. Fasten off and weave in ends.

For nose: with color A, ch 2, hdc in the 2nd ch from hook and fasten off. Weave in ends.

Eyes

Row 1: With Yellow Yarn, ch 2, sl st back to the first ch space and place 3 sc in the space. Fasten off and weave in ends. (Make 2)

Row 2: With Black Yarn, sl st to the last sc of row 1 and sl st in the next 2 sts, ch 1 grab your other eye and sl st 3 across the other 3 sc sts. Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Row 3: To make the iris, use black or red yarn and sew loops over the 2nd sc of row 1. You can also choose to use 6mm eyes. Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Assembly

Hot glue gun the eyes, nose, and mouth to the Grinch face.

Use Color A to better secure the cheeks and the nose and your Grinch is ready to steal...or save Christmas!
