Looking for a quick and easy project to complete that makes use of beginner crochet techniques? You've found a good one! Practice your basic crochet stitches in the process of creating a cute and useful pouch to carry around your necessities. No specific yarn required, and many variations on the base pattern are available!
Pattern Variations:
--I've tested this pattern using several medium (4) weight yarns and a 5mm (H-8 US) hook but theoretically you could use larger or smaller weight yarns instead by modifying the number of stitches in your rows (e.g. a smaller weight would increase the amount of stitches per row and a larger weight would decrease the number of stitches per row). The foundation chain length should be approximately the width of your phone plus 1-1.5 inches on each side to allow for stitching together. If you switch yarn weights, I suggest using the recommended hook for achieving a 4"x4" gauge on the label to keep similar ratios to the original pattern.
--While I prefer to start with a foundation cord, using a foundation chain works just as well!
--If you want a ribbed texture for your pouch, crochet into the back loop only (BLO) of each stitch instead of looping under both.
--To add some fun color contrast, feel free to use other weight yarns for the bag strap and seams!

First set of rows! I recommend using either stich markers or a row counter app to keep track of what row you are on, as I got lost pretty quickly my first few times.

Now that we've finished off the material for the pouch, its time to make it into an actual pouch shape. You can change the flap size by joining together at a higher/lower block than listed below! I chose to add a button to secure my flap shut as seen in the example picture, but that's not necessary to keep it closed.

Now that we've established the base pattern, it's time to create the material for the main pouch by repeating it in blocks! Here is where the stitch markers/row counters come in handy; I recommend placing a marker after every block (part 1 is the first block; see photo for 2 blocks) or making 5 row counters (SC1/HDC1/DC/HDC2/SC2) to keep track of where you are in each block. You should end up with a total of 60-75 rows--including the block from part 1--depending on the height of your phone. The total amount should cover 2 and 1/4 the height of your phone. Feel free to wrap it around your phone as you go to check!
